How to Select the Right Battery Lifting Magnet
Selecting a correct battery lifting magnet is important for manufacturers. Please consider these factors:
1. Power Availability – The Key Decision Point
Your worksite decide the magnet type. Do you have a power source on your crane? An electromagnetic lifter may work. But if you’re in a remote yard, using a forklift crane without power supply to moving steel, a battery lifting magnet is the better choice.
2. Material Type and Thickness
The lifting magnet’s capacity is based on lifting clean, flat, low-carbon steel (like ASTM A36). Alloy steels, cast iron, and other materials have reduced magnetic permeability and will lower capacity.
Material thickness also matters. The thin materials (under 5mm) may not absorb the full magnetic field. HVR MAG battery magnetic lifter could be designed to handle steel plate with thickness from 1.5mm.
3. Safe Working Load (SWL)
Select a battery lifting magnet with a Safe Working Load that matches the maximum weight of your steel material and your crane’s lifting capacity. Never exceed the rated capacity. For round materials or rough surfaces, the SWL is typically derated.
4. Surface Condition
The Rated capacity of battery lifting magnet is established based on ideal conditions involving contact surfaces that are perfectly flat, smooth, and clean.. The rust, scale, paint, uneven surfaces, or debris create “air gaps” that reduce lifting power.
5. Operating Environment
Consider temperature. The standard electro permanent battery lifting magnet has maximum temperature limits (typically 80°C). Using them on hotter materials can permanently damage the magnet. If the temperature of working temperature is more than 80°C, please indicate it previously. HVR MAG we offer battery lifting magnet until 180°C.
6. Battery Life and Runtime
Please check the battery capacity (Ah) and the expected operating time after full charged. Most industrial battery lifting magnets offer over 8 hours of continuous operation, which is sufficient to meet the normally steel handling needs for your workshop.
