Customer Challenge: Reliable Clamping for an Irregular Steel Component
In metal fabrication, irregular workpieces often present challenges for conventional mechanical fixtures. HVR MAG recently provided a customized magnetic chuck solution for a customer machining a specially shaped steel component measuring 1150 × 133 × 110 mm. Due to its unique profile, standard clamps could not provide sufficient contact or stable positioning, resulting in complicated setup and reduced machining efficiency.

Customized Magnetic Chuck Solution

To meet the customer’s requirements, HVR MAG designed a customized HMC1-118028A electro-permanent magnetic chuck. The chuck measures 1180 × 280 mm, operates with an AC380V power supply and DC160V working voltage, delivers a rated magnetic force of 14 kgf/cm², and weighs approximately 172 kg. The electro-permanent technology requires power only during magnetization and demagnetization, ensuring secure workholding without continuous power consumption during machining.

Raised Magnetic Pole Design for Better Workholding

The key feature of this magnetic chuck is its raised magnetic pole design. Instead of using a standard flat magnetic surface, the magnetic poles were specially raised to match the geometry of the customer’s workpiece. This customized structure increases the effective contact area between the chuck and the part, producing a stronger and more uniform magnetic holding force while avoiding unstable contact points. As a result, the workpiece can be clamped securely without deformation or movement during machining.

Results

By replacing conventional fixtures with a customized clamp solution, the customer achieved faster setup, improved machining stability, and higher production efficiency. This project demonstrates how application-specific magnetic workholding can solve complex clamping challenges for irregular components, making electro-permanent magnetic chucks an ideal solution for modern metal fabrication and precision machining.
